THE LIBRARY AT HERITAGE ACADEMY
The Library at Heritage Academy is more than a room to find information. It is a warm and inviting place to find materials for pleasure and for learning. It is a place where one can find students from all grades using the computerized catalog, doing research in books, databases and the Internet, working on group projects, relaxing with a book, or just plain relaxing. It is a place that helps build a strong foundation for life-long learning.
The Library Program at Heritage is designed for the student to feel comfortable in any library setting. They learn that libraries are organized in a certain way, and that the catalog is the index to what is in the collection, and where it is located. They learn about different fiction genres, authors and illustrators, and discover favorite literary characters.
They learn that the school library supports and supplements their classroom. They learn that the Librarian is a source of guidance and help.
A child’s first experience with a school library is where it all begins. The K-5 grades have a structured library visit each week, which includes a story time or read-aloud, hands-on information finding skills, and checking out books and sharing those books. The Middle School is a constant presence, and it is common for students from the upper grades to use the library at all times during the day. It is a busy place, a shared place, and a wonderful place which is exactly what a library should be.
