RABIES
CLINIC
JUNE
12th:
On May 7, 2008, a
dog killed a raccoon
in the area of
Ashley Street and
Smith Avenue in West
Springfield. The
raccoon later tested
positive for
rabies. The dog
will be quarantined
for 45 days so that
it can be monitored
for signs of
illness.
Due to this event,
the Thomas J.
O'Connor Animal
Control and Adoption
Center and the
Eastern States
Exposition in
cooperation with the
West Springfield
Health Department
are sponsoring a
rabies vaccination
clinic for cats and
dogs. The clinic
will be held on
Thursday, June 12,
2008, from 5:30 pm
to 7:30 pm under the
arch of the
Visitor's Center.
Enter the Eastern
States grounds
through Gate 2 and
take a right at the
Moses Building, then
a left. The
Visitor's Center
will be on your
right. There will be
no parking fee.
Bring your cats in
carriers and your
dogs on leashes.
Rabies vaccines are
$10 per animal.
Rabies and
distemper/parvo
vaccines will be $15
per animal. Please
note that payment
must be in cash; no
other form of
payment will be
accepted. Rabies is
a disease that is
fatal to humans and
all warm-blooded
mammals, which
includes cats and
dogs. Please have
your animals
vaccinated against
rabies.
A VERY
SPECIAL 'THANK YOU':
In April,
we were honored and
amazed by the
creativity,
dedication and
generosity of the
Heritage
Academy
students,
faculty and families
who put on a special
benefit production
to spotlight the
enormous problem of
homeless animals.
After taking a tour
of the Thomas J.
O'Connor Center in
March, the students
and their teacher,
Jami Zmurko, decided
to do something to
assist our animals,
and bring attention
to both the number
of homeless animals
in the greater
Springfield area and
the Thomas J.
O'Connor Center.
The benefit
production raised
nearly $1500 in
contributions and a
mountain of shelter
supplies was donated
as well. The money
will be used for
assisting animals
with special needs,
whether fixing a
broken leg, or
treating other
illnesses. The
Thomas J. O'Connor
Foundation is a
501c3 organization
that was created to
supplement the small
budget for animal
care allotted to us
by our contract
cities for direct
animal care. If you
would like to make a
tax-deductible
contribution that
will allow us to
mend adoptable
animals, please
click on the
link. Thank you
to the Heritage
Academy students who
worked so hard to
make life a little
better for our
animals.
