ADMINISTRATION

Dr. Deborah Starr -- Head of School

Dr. Deborah R. Starr received a B.A. cum laude from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, a M.S. in Early Childhood Education from the City University of New York at Queens College, and an Ed.D. from Nova Southeastern University, where she specialized in educational leadership of Jewish Day Schools. She has done post-graduate work at Harvard Graduate School of Education.

For 12 years, Dr. Starr was an elementary, and Social Studies teacher in the New York City Public Schools, where she was a Finalist for Teacher of the Year. She is a recipient of a Fullbright Award to teach in Nottingham, England, and the Ely Trachtenberg Award from the United Federation of Teachers.

Dr. Starr was at the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Hartford for 10 years. She was a fifth grade teacher, General Studies Curriculum Coordinator, Lower School Head, and finally Vice-Principal for General Studies. Upon leaving the school, parents set up an endowment fund in her name to honor her many years of dedication at the school.

Deborah has been married to Howard Starr since 1971.  She has adopted twin daughters from South Korea and makes her home in Suffield, Connecticut.

Shimon Shushan -- Jewish Life Director

Mr. Shimon Shushan is the Jewish Life Director and a Judaic Studies teacher in the Heritage Academy Middle School. He received his B.A. from Michlala Jerusalem College of Education, and an M.A. in Bible from the Herzog Institute. In addition, he was granted School Principal Certification from Bar Ilan University.

For twelve years Shimon taught Junior High School and High School students in Yeshivat Bnei Akiva Nechalim; Talmud, Bible, Holydays, Jewish Philosophy, Biblical Touring Coordinator and all Judaic Studies. He was an instructor in Talmud and Jewish Thought in Neot David Torah Elementary School, Petach Tikva. For six years Mr. Shushan served as administrator and designer of Talmud Studies Programs used by more than 50 Schools in Israel. In his town, Neve Tzuf, he served as the Chairman of the Education Committee and Chairman of the Religious Committee. Mr. Shushan was sent by the Israel Foreign Ministry and Jewish Agency on four missions to the FSU (Former Soviet Union). 

Shimon has been married to Idit, also a teacher at Heritage Academy, for 10 years and they have four children, two of whom attend Heritage Academy, and one in the pre-school program at the JCC-Springfield.

Denise Broverman -- Executive Assistant

Denise Broverman has been at Heritage Academy for nearly 15 years.   Denise and her husband Mark live in Longmeadow and have two grown children both of whom attended Heritage Academy. "I have seen so many changes in the school but I feel privileged to be a part of the Heritage of today – by far the strongest and most exciting school yet, with a superb and dedicated faculty and administration.”   Denise enjoys playing Mah Jongg with her friends, riding on the back of her husband’s Harley, and spending time with her family.

Lara Temkin-Pisani -- Admissions Director

Lara Temkin-Pisani is the Admissions and Marketing Director at Heritage Academy.  She attended SUNY Binghamton and graduated from The University of Massachusetts. She is a Sulamot Family Initiative trained Family Educator and worked as Programming Director and Family Educator for Temple Beth El, Springfield. She was also the Family Educator for B’nai Israel in Northampton and The Jewish Community of Amherst where she also worked as a religious school teacher in the 3rd, 6th and 7th grades. In addition, she has worked in the fields of marketing and development for non-profit organizations and in human resources.

Lara is a recipient of The Harold Grinspoon Award for Excellence in Jewish Teaching excellence and has attended the Whizin Institute.

Lara lives with her husband Kirk in Belchertown, MA. They have two children both of whom attend Heritage Academy. Her outside hobbies include gardening, interior decorating, and photography.

Lynne Aronson -- Office Assistant / Receptionist

Lynne Aronson earned a B.A. in Spanish, from Mount Holyoke College. Lynne has a depth of experience that spans multiple disciplines. Early in her career, Lynne was employed by Nordstrom, where she was recognized as an exceptional contributor. During her employment at Nordstrom she served as a Purchasing Agent, Administrative Assistant, Human Resource and Payroll Manager for 3 stores, and Assistant to the Merchandise Manager for the So. California Region. Lynne subsequently worked for Milton Bradley and LEGO Corporations, where she contributed to the growth of these operations. In her roles as Executive Secretary, Administrative Assistant, and ultimately Latin America Sales Coordinator, Lynne was responsible for establishing and maintaining processes and procedures to ensure efficient operations.

Lynne looks forward to greeting the parents, students, and visitors when they enter Heritage Academy.

FACULTY

Cantor Elizabeth Berke -- Music

Cantor Berke is originally from Rochester, NY, and moved to Springfield with her family in the summer of 2005. Other than Rochester, she has spent much of her time living in Houston,Texas. She has a B.A. in history from Cornell University, her Diploma of Hazzan, M.A. in Sacred Music and an M.A. in Jewish Education, all from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Cantor Berke has over 10 years of experience teaching preschool through high school age students in a variety of areas. Cantor Berke has two daughters both of whom attend Heritage Academy.   Her husband Steven is the Cantor at Temple Beth-El in Longmeadow.

Tali Edry -- Kindergarten: Judaic Studies

Tali Edry is an experienced teacher of 12 years, having taught in both the United States and Israel. Tali trained for four years at Tal Peyot Institute in Tel Aviv, Israel where her specialty was art. Prior to teaching at Heritage Academy, Tali taught at Hillel Torah school in Skokie, Illinois.  Tali has taught kindergarten, elementary, and middle school students.  Tali has been at Heritage Academy since 1997. In 2002, Tali Edry was a recipient of the Award for Excellence granted to outstanding teachers by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. Tali brings a strong repertoire of Israeli song and dance to the kindergarten program. Tali is married to Yehuda Edry (also a Heritage Academy faculty member) with whom she has five children two of whom graduated from Heritage Academy, two of whom currently attend Heritage Academy and one in the preschool at the JCC  . They live in Springfield, MA.

Yehuda Edry -- Grades 4 and 5: Judaic Studies

Yehuda Edry has been a teacher at Heritage Academy since 1997. Yehuda has been a teacher in Israel since 1987 and has 20 years of Jewish teaching experience. Yehuda attended Kerem Bayavne Yeshiva in Israel for 8 years and received his BA from Moreshet Yackov College in Rehovot. Yehuda studied in Rabbinic School in Israel and served as school Rabbi in Rehovot and Petech Tikvah. Yehuda has taught 3rd, 4th and 5th grade at Heritage Academy as well as the 6th, 7th and 8th grades at Heritage Academy Middle School. He has also taught middle and high school in Israel. Yehuda and his wife Tali reside in Springfield, MA with their 5 children.

Chris Heath -- Middle School: Social Studies, Mathematics and Support

Christine Heath attended and graduated from Towson State Teacher's College. She received a B.S. degree in Elementary Education with a major in history. She taught in the Baltimore County school system for many years. Christine has been a middle school teacher for over 20 years and has taught English, Literature, Geography, Religion and History. Christine has a special interest in the Holocaust, and world religions. She has attended graduate courses at St. Michael's in Winooski, Vermont and the University in Maine, in Orono. These courses concentrated on the Holocaust and Children's Literature. She has taken courses and continues to study with Rabbi Sternberg at the JCC to further her knowledge on the Holocaust.

In 2005, she was awarded a teaching grant to travel to Poland to the major concentration camps with 124 other American teachers, to further expand her knowledge on this period of history. She says "The "March for the Living" convinced me even more that this subject area must continuously be taught, so that lessons for future generations will never allow an event such as this to reoccur." Christine says she is "privileged to be working as a teacher at Heritage Academy. The support of staff, student and parents have made my transition from a school where I taught for so many years, so much easier"

Christine is married to Father Thomas Heath.  They have three children, two girls and a boy, as well as eight grandchildren, who she fondly calls "My Great 8".

Geri Johnson -- Librarian

Geri Johnson holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Boston University, and a Masters of Library Science from the University of Rhode Island.  Her early professional experience included teaching for the Springfield and Agawam School Systems, and the Yeshiva Academy. When she took a Library Associate position for the Springfield Library, she realized a love of connecting people with books and information. After earning her Library Degree while working full-time, Geri moved to the Reference Department at the Central Library.  In addition to being a Reference Librarian, she also held the positions of Community Services Librarian, and Library Volunteer Coordinator. After 29 years at the Springfield Library, Geri took early retirement, and came to Heritage in September 2002.  In her words, “This was just the kind of position that brought together my experience and interests. I feel like I came home.”

Geri lives in Westfield with her husband Tim and their dogs, Lady and Phoebe.    

Aileen Kramer -- Grade 2: General Studies

Aileen Kramer has been a teacher at Heritage Academy since 1989.  Aileen attended Ohio State University and graduated from Long Island University (C.W.Post campus). She began her teaching career in Rhode Island, then spent many years raising her 3 children. Mrs. Kramer returned to teaching in 1989.  Aileen has taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade at Heritage Academy and has also been an assistant resource room teacher and librarian.

In 2002 she was the recipient of the Harold Grinspoon Award for Excellence in Jewish Education as well as the recipient of the National Grinspoon-Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Education.

Aileen and her husband Cliff reside in Longmeadow, MA. They have 2 sons and a daughter.  Aileen has three grandchildren.

Donna Lorenzo -- Middle School: Mathematics

Donna Lorenzo received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Fairfield University in 1979.  She received her Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from Central Connecticut State University.  She taught at Sage Park Junior High in Windsor, CT. and Avon Middle School in Avon, CT until she left teaching to start a family.  She returned to teaching in 1998 when she joined the faculty of the Hebrew High School of New England.  The next year she combined her position at HHNE with one at the Solomon Schechter Day School.  This year she is happy to be sharing her teaching duties between HHNE and Heritage Academy.  Donna has taught a variety of courses, including 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math,  Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, and Statistics.   She has also taught an SAT Prep class during study hall and has been the  ninth grade advisor at HHNE.  Donna resides in Bloomfield, Connecticut with her three sons.

Daniel Mason -- Grades 4-8: Science

Daniel Mason holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geology, with a minor in Physics from Hamilton College. He grew up in rural Western Massachusetts and returned to the Pioneer Valley after college, working in the environmental industry for five years. He then turned his attention to his love of education, working for Jewish philanthropic organizations and the Northampton Public Schools. He has a passion for the sciences and his Jewish roots and enjoys sharing his experiences with the Jewish community. At Heritage Academy Dan has found a truly embracing community where the mind, heart, and soul are nurtured and inspired. Dan lives in Northampton, Massachusetts with his new bride Sharon.

Hofit Nachum -- Grade 3: Judaic Studies

                            Mechina

Hofit Nachum has a B.A in education and sociology from Bar-Ilan University, Israel.

She received her teaching certificate from Givat-Washington, Israel.

She has 10 years of teaching experience in all elementary grades.

During the last few years, she taught individualized instruction to new "Olim" at the Learning Center in Ashqelon.

Francine Ochs -- Kindergarten: General Studies

Fran Ochs is a veteran teacher of more than 25 years, and she has been at Heritage Academy since 2001.  She has taken on many roles, first as a substitute teacher in both secular and Judaic studies, then as a teaching assistant in grades 1 and 2.  After that she taught second grade, and since 1996 has been the Kindergarten secular studies teacher.  Ms. Fran, as her students affectionately call her, has spent her career teaching in a Jewish setting.  She taught Hebrew in supplementary schools for many years, and has written curriculum in both Judaic and secular studies.  

Her education was at Boston State College where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She is also a graduate of the Hebrew Prozdor High School in Brookline, MA.  In 1999, Mrs. Ochs was a recipient of The Harold Grinspoon Awards for Excellence in Jewish Education.

She and her husband Jeffrey, a physician, reside in Longmeadow, MA.  They are the parents of 2 grown daughters.

Amy O'Connor -- Grade 5: General Studies

Amy O’Connor received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education (2003) and a Master’s degree in Elementary Education (2006) from Westfield State College. She previously taught in the Holyoke and Springfield Public Schools. She is most impressed with the enthusiasm of the staff and students at Heritage Academy. Apart from teaching, Amy likes to go for long walks, kayak, and spend time with her family. Amy resides in Chicopee, Massachusetts with her husband and son.

Marsha Rothschild -- Speech/Language Pathologist

Marsha Rothschild received her Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Speech Pathology and Audiology from Ithaca College.  Marsha has twenty-eight years experience as a school speech pathologist.  The last seventeen years, Marsha worked as a speech/language pathologist for the Town of Agawam, retiring in June 2004.  Marsha resides in Longmeadow with her husband Paul, an attorney in Springfield.  Marsha has 2 children.

Susan Shaker -- Art

Susan Shaker holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education from the University of Vermont.  She has taught art in Vermont, Missouri, and Massachusetts.  Mrs. Shaker has served on the Board of Directors of the Longmeadow Soccer Association, Longmeadow Educational Excellence Foundation (LEEF), and Gardeners on the Green.  A member of Temple Beth El, she has served on the Board of Directors, its Executive Committee, as well as the Education, Nominating, B’Nai Mitzvah and Cemetery Committees.  Mrs. Shaker has taught art classes at B’Yahad, the Sandi Kupperman Learning Center, and Kehillah Community High School.  She has been the art teacher at Heritage Academy since the year 2000.  In 2004, she was the recipient of the Harold Grinspoon Award for Excellence in Jewish Education.  Mrs. Shaker resides in Longmeadow with her husband Leonard and three children.

Claire Sholes -- Enrichment

Claire (Frankel) Sholes graduated from Carleton College in Minnesota with a BA in English.   She holds a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology of Gifted and Talented from the University of Connecticut at Storrs, and has also taken coursework at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Assumption College.  She has been teaching in regular classrooms and in gifted programs since 1987, and has worked in public and private schools in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Flagstaff, Arizona.  

Claire served six years on the Gifted Education Advisory Board to the Massachusetts Department of Education and has conducted a number of professional development workshops on differentiation for high-end learners and other topics.  She has worked as a volunteer with the Odyssey of the Mind and Destination Imagination problem-solving programs for many yeas.

Claire has been working, part-time, at Heritage Academy as the Elementary Enrichment Coordinator since the 2005-2006 school year.  Some of her time is spent working directly with students providing enrichment, but she is also responsible for serving as a resource for staff, providing professional development, developing curriculum, and identifying students in need of enrichment services.

She has lived in Rutland, MA with her husband, Owen, since 1979.  They have one son, Colin. 

Idit Shushan -- Grades 1 and 2: Judaic Studies

Idit Shushan has been a teacher for 10 years in Israel before coming to the U.S. to teach at Heritage Academy in 2005. She was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in Hebrew Language, Political Science, and International Relations from Bar Ilan University. In addition, she earned her Senior Certified Teacher’s Certificate from Bar Ilan and has a Tenured Teaching Certificate from the State of Israel, Department of Education.

For the ten years prior to coming to Heritage, Idit was a Hebrew Language Arts & Judaic Studies teacher as well as a Preparatory Instructor for the Israeli Matriculation Exams (Bagrut) in three locations: Ulpanat Bnei Akiva Tzfira High School in Moshav Tzfira; Naor High School in Petach Tikva; and Amit High School in Petach Tikva. Idit has been trained in computers, Judaic Studies, Bible, Jewish Philosophy and teaching Hebrew as a second language. 

Idit has been married to Shimon for 10 years and they have four children, two of whom are students at Heritage Academy, and one who is in preschool at the JCC-Springfield.

Marilyn Smith -- Resource Specialist

Mrs. Smith is our Special Education Resource Coordinator and our Special Education Teacher.  She received her undergraduate education from Skidmore College and American University.  Mrs. Smith’s Master of Education was obtained in 1994 at American International College with a specialty in the Young Child with Special Needs.  She is licensed to teach in the fields of Special Education for grades k-8, Special Education for the Young Child, and k-8 Regular Education.  Mrs. Smith has more than 37 years of experience in Special Education, Regular Education, and private tutoring.  She has taught at Heritage for 10 years.

In her role as our Special Education Resource Coordinator, Mrs. Smith provides supervision to our Speech and Language Teacher, our School Counselor, and our Teacher tutors.   As Special Education Resource Teacher at Heritage, she works with those students with Learning Disabilities, ADD, ADHD, organization challenges, reading/math difficulties, and enrichment needs.  She also works closely with our teachers in developing plans to meet the individual needs of our students.  Mrs. Smith coordinates outside testing when needed and meets with parents to discuss the results and recommendations.  She is a past winner of the Harold Grinspoon Award for Jewish Educator of the Year in 1998.

Mrs. Smith resides in Longmeadow with Sherman, her husband of 35 years. They have a daughter.

Christine Stokes -- Grade 3: General Studies

Christine Stokes holds a Master’s degree in Education from Cambridge College, a B.A. in Communications, with a minor in Music, from Central Connecticut State University. She has 4 years of teaching experience (in grades 5-8), in Connecticut and Massachusetts. In her words, “The staff and students at Heritage Academy have welcomed me and embraced my heart.” Ms. Stokes resides in Windsor Locks, CT. Her interests include: spending time with family, singing, running, and reading.

David Wells -- Physical Education

David Wells received his Bachelor of Science in Education and Biology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  He received his Masters degree in Educational Administration from Westfield State College.  David is certified in Elementary School, Science, Biology, Health and Physical Education and as an Elementary School Principal.  David has taught science, health and physical education and administered in several schools mostly at the elementary level.  David presently developed and teaches physical education for grades K-8,  David and his wife Janie have 4 children and 6 grandchildren.  Both David and his wife have worked in education all the working years of their lives,  His favorite activities include golfing, skiing, hunting and fishing.

Rachel Wesley -- Middle School: Judaic Studies / Hebrew Language;
                              Computer Technology

Rachel Wesley was born in Israel, and lived there for more than 30 years.  She always wanted to be a teacher.  Rachel graduated from Beit-Berl College, where she majored in Biology and Chemistry for Middle School.  She taught Science for 13 years in different grade levels.  Rachel married her husband Steve in February 1993, and moved with her family to Atlanta in 1996.  Rachel taught Hebrew and Judaic Studies at The Epstein Solomon Schecter School of Atlanta. Rachel and her family relocated to Connecticut in the fall of 2000.  She has three children two of whom attend Heritage Academy.  Rachel’s interests include spending time with her family, Israeli dancing, cooking, reading and listening to music.

Sally Zimowski -- Grade 1: General Studies
                              Technology

Sally Zimowski joined the Heritage academy faculty in September of 2000. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Ohio State University and attained a Montessori Degree from St. Nicholas Training Center in London England for preschool through first grade. She also received a certificate in administration from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield , CT.

She has been nominated for the Grinspoon Teacher of the Year award and has served on many educational committees and teams. She has been part of the accreditation team for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. She also holds a teaching certificate in Massachusetts.

Ms. Zimowski has taught for twenty-four years in the elementary grades. She is married with 2 children and lives in Somers, CT.

Jami Zmurko -- Grade 4: General Studies
                           Guidance

Jami Zmurko holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from the University of Delaware.  She started teaching at Heritage Academy in 2004, and previously taught at the Benchmark School in Media, Pennsylvania.  Jami thoroughly enjoys her work at Heritage Academy.  She is most impressed with the climate of the school, as all of the children come eager to learn and grow.  Outside of teaching, Jami enjoys drawing, photographing nature, bird watching, playing the guitar, and reading.  She is also very passionate about rescuing animals from shelters, and is currently raising two beautiful rescue dogs.  Jami lives in Northampton, Massachusetts with her husband Mike.
